Quantas “Double Cross” – National Stop Work Meeting on Friday (TWU-Australia)

October 27, 2011

After Qantas management’s “double-cross” in enterprise bargaining negotiations, delegates across the country rejected the fraud offer to its workforce which guarantees no job security and downgrades industry standard, and voted for national stop work meetings for one hour at most airports tomorrow.

Just a few days ago, in response to a leaked document to the Herald with Qantas management’s plans to outsource its ground handling work to labour hire companies long before EBA negotiation started, Olivia Wirth said, quote on quote: “Qantas doesn’t use outsourcing. … There is no plan to outsource”.

However in a meeting yesterday, Alan Joyce and his management team have said that Qantas will no longer employ any new staff on Qantas rates – No new employee will have any job security under Qantas’ plans.

Qantas’ offer rejected by TWU delegates including provisions of large percentage of ground handling work (can be outsourced to lower paid labour hire workers, and no new employee will be employed under Qantas rates.

These offers Qantas put on the negotiation table are simply not enforceable. Qantas delegates are deeply disappointed and tired of Qantas management’s games – the same executive team who are ‘Jetstarlising’ our national carrier while getting 37% to 71% pay-rises last year.

Our Qantas delegates who value job security as their first, second and third priority have no choice but to reject these offers, particularly when Qantas made it clear that it will not honor an agreement with limitation on outsourcing.

Nation wide stop work meetings were endorsed by delegates to further discuss the negotiation.
