February 9, 2025

The International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations (IFALPA) Professional & Government Affairs (PGA) Committee Meeting took place on 5-6 February 2025, hosted by the Kenya Airline Pilots’ Association (KALPA). The meeting gathered key aviation industry stakeholders to discuss critical issues and future strategies.

Representing the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), Mohammed Dauda Safiyanu, the Africa Regional Secretary, highlighted the importance of social dialogue, fair labour practices, and worker representation in sustainable aviation recovery. He stressed the need for ICAO to embed labour standards in aviation governance, support workers’ voices in policy-making, and advocate for labour clauses in Air Service Agreements (ASAs).

Safiyanu also underscored the alignment of social justice with environmental sustainability, the importance of capacity-building for aviation workers, and the need for preparedness for global shocks. He called for policies promoting diversity, inclusivity, and gender equality within ICAO’s strategic pillars.

The ITF and IFALPA have enjoyed a close relationship over the past decade, working collaboratively on various issues within ICAO. Both organisations share common strategies at the ICAO Air Transport Regulation Panel (ATRP) and aim to strengthen their collaboration further.

Bilal Malkawi, the Arab World Regional Secretary and the Acting Civil Aviation and Tourism Secretary, praised the contributions made at the meeting, stating, “These insights and advocacy reflect our shared commitment to sustainable and fair aviation practices. The efforts underscore the vital role of social dialogue and labour standards in shaping the future of aviation. We are proud of the strong relationship between the ITF and IFALPA, and we look forward to deepening our cooperation in the years to come.”
