Houston-based SM Cargo Agents voted to join the IAM and will continue their campaign for a first contract.

Seeking improved working conditions, a better quality of life for their families and fairness on the job, approximately 250 SM Freight Cargo workers today became the newest members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM). The National Mediation Board conducted the election, with 81 percent of employees voting in favor of IAM representation.”I want to congratulate my co-workers for showing the courage and dignity of standing up and voting for change,” said SM Cargo Agent Terrel Nicks.

“After seeing how successful the Machinists Union was for its United workers, it was an easy decision for us to join the IAM,” added co-worker Nate Henderson.

SM Cargo performs freight handling for United Airlines in Houston. The Cargo Agents began their campaign for IAM representation earlier this year after seeing first-hand the benefits of being an IAM member from their sisters and brothers at United Airlines from Local Lodges 811 and 2198. The IAM recently negotiated beween 19-32 percent pay raises, significant pension increases and industry best job security for its members at United Airlines.

“I congratulate and welcome the Cargo Agents of SM Freight Cargo into our IAM family,” said General Vice President Sito Pantoja. “I’d also like to thank District 141 for a great job in helping these brave workers form a union.”

The Cargo Agents will now enter the next phase of their campaign and prepare for contract negotiations.
