Organising manual set to help increase union power

July 13, 2011

A brand new tool to help build union power was launched at an event in the UK recently.

The ITF organising manual was launched at a well-attended ITF education and organising conference in Surrey, UK, from 28-30 June. It aims to increase worker participation to achieve the ultimate goal of enhancing union power in the workplace and across the transport industry.

The training resource helps unions to develop their organising skills and glean valuable information on how to organise. The materials are extensive and contain lessons from many different parts of the world.

Alana Dave, ITF education officer, said: “Training results in better organising, and this manual can help affiliates plan and implement their organising campaigns more effectively. It must be used flexibly but every affiliate will find something in the materials that they need and can use”.

The manual focuses on a range of areas including: preparation and planning; benchmarking; mapping; building organising committees and workers’ networks and public mobilisation.

“Selecting an organising target strategically is a difficult process for affiliates and often requires hard choices in today’s environment of complex industries and supply chains. To make a campaign successful, we need skilled organisers” concluded Ingo Marowsky, ITF organising globally coordinator.

Currently available in English, the manual will soon be available in Spanish, French, Arabic, Portuguese and Turkish. To download the manual, visit http://www.itfglobal.org/education/materials.cfm/detail/29506 or for further details email: education@itf.org.uk and organising@itf.org.uk
