National action day on 9th June against Turkish Government ban on strikes in the aviation industry

June 8, 2012

Despite a wave of resistance actions by Hava-Is’ members, and strenuous protests by the ITF and ETF and their affiliates, an amendment banning aviation workers from carrying out and partaking in strikes has been rushed through the Turkish General Assembly and approved swiftly by the Turkish President Abdullah Gul.

Hava-Is continues its struggle with the strong support of the ITF and ETF who are raising these issues in key institutions and mobilising their affiliates to support the union’s campaign.  The main Turkish opposition party CHP is also going to appeal against the law by taking it to the Turkish Constitutional Court, though this process will take many months.

Recently, the Trade Union Unity Platform consisting of 10 unions in Turkey has thrown its weight behind Hava-Is and is organising a national action day on Saturday, 9th June, to oppose the strike ban.  Actions will be taking place in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya, Adana, Bursa, and Gaziantep.
