April 30, 2018

The ITF alongside the ITUC and BWI yesterday attended the historical opening of the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) office in Doha. For the first time the workers in Qatar will be able to bring complaints through the ILO office and it will allow for the ITF to assist in the process and the follow up the outcomes.

This is a fundamental step for workers in Qatar and a serious labour reform in the country.

The ITF has been working for the last number of years to improve the working conditions of transport workers in Qatar and in particular the Qatar Airways workers. Now they all can be sure their complaints are going to be heard through this grievance mechanism.

Sharan Burrow, General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation stated today: “For Airlines workers the complaint process is fundamental because they will be able to have workplace committees and also from today they will be able to bring complaints through the ILO office” She added: “ We are optimistic and expecting in less than two weeks the exit visa to go ending the worst of the kafala system”

Gabriel Mocho Rodriguez, ITF Civil Aviation Secretary, who also attended the event said: “We hope we are going to continue this partnership in favor of the workers from all over the world that came here to Qatar with a lot of hope. We will make this work and workers in Qatar will not be alone anymore.”
