ITF reports ‘substantial progress’ in Egyptair dispute (ITF press release)

September 11, 2012

The ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) is pleased to announce that what it describes as ‘substantial progress’ has been made in an ongoing dispute at Egyptair. The global union intervened last Friday, 7 September, when police and security guards reportedly failed to protect striking cabin crew members at Cairo Airport (see this earlier press release).

ITF general secretary David Cockroft stated: “The good news is that negotiations are now once again in progress and the strike is therefore suspended. We hope that these will settle the outstanding issues that led to the dispute.”

He continued: “We have received a prompt and sensible response from the Egyptian government addressing our concerns, and I would like to express our gratitude to Egypt’s civil aviation minister, Samir Imbaby, for his quick actions.”

Responding to the ITF’s intervention on Friday, Egyptian civil aviation minister Samir Imbaby wrote: “First I would like to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude for the important role played by the ITF House to secure the workers’ rights and preserve justice and fairness in general and in the Civil Aviation Industry particularly.

“In the meantime kindly note that this issue is being handled with great care and attention and I have interfered from day one of my nomination as the Minister of Civil Aviation to minimize the gap between EGYPTAIR and the cabin crew.

“On the 7th of September an extended meeting was held in the attendance of H.E. the Minister of Tourism, the Egyptian President’s Legal Advisor, EGYPTAIR representatives and the cabin crew representatives to discuss all their demands what have already been accomplished during the last year and what still under discussions in order to agree on the ultimate solutions and mechanism related thereto.

“In the light of the above, the cabin crew representatives agreed to resume their work until they reach a final settlement with EGYPTAIR, which is expected to be finalized shortly.”
