ITF Launches new guidelines on integrating uncrewed vehicles into air traffic management systems

September 6, 2024

The ITF has released a pivotal document, “Introduction of Uncrewed Vehicle (UAV) in the Air Traffic Management System (ATM),” aimed at guiding its global affiliates and the broader civil aviation community through the complexities of integrating Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) into the Air Traffic Management (ATM) system. This new report marks a significant step in ensuring that the voices of workers are at the forefront of the ongoing evolution in airspace management.

Recognising the transformative potential of UAVs, also known as drones, the ITF formed the Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems Working Group. This body was tasked with keeping ITF members informed on the rapid advancements in UAV technology and ensuring that worker safety, training, and job security remain central as the aviation industry embraces these innovations.

The document serves as a comprehensive guideline, laying out the red lines that must be incorporated into both international and national regulations concerning UAV integration. These red lines are not merely technical but are rooted in the need to protect the safety, rights, and livelihoods of workers who will be directly impacted by these changes.

The ITF’s new guidelines are not just a technical roadmap; they are a call to action for governments, regulatory bodies, and industry leaders to ensure that the integration of UAVs is done with the full involvement of workers. The ITF’s stance is clear: no technological advancement should come at the expense of worker safety, job security, or the integrity of the air traffic management system.

By advocating for strong regulations, comprehensive training, and an inclusive change management process, the ITF is ensuring that the workers who keep our skies safe every day are not left behind as the industry evolves.

This report is a must-read for ITF affiliates and all stakeholders in the civil aviation sector who are committed to ensuring a safe, secure, and fair transition to a future that includes UAVs in our skies.
