ITF denounces aviation union leaders’ murder (press release)

July 18, 2011

The ITF has declared the death by sectarian violence of Amir Shah, President of the People Unity CBAUnion of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) as a “rude shock not only for Pakistan but the entire world.”

In a strong condemnation of violence, ITF President Paddy Crumlin of Australia’s maritime union, alongside the federation’s General Secretary David Cockroft paid homage to Shah and pronounced ITF members as ready to expose “forces in society that try to silence the voices of democratic voices of working class organisations”

Shah was killed in Karachi on Saturday evening when unknown assailants opened fire on his car.

PIA workers went on a strike on Sunday to protest against the murder. The action was later called off after a short protest that resulted in the delay of several flights.
