ITF congratulates new ICAO Council president

The ITF general secretary has written to the new president of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to congratulate him on his election and looking forward to further close cooperation between the two organisations.
Salvatore Sciacchitano, from Italy, will begin his three-year term in January 2020 and succeeds Dr Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu from Nigeria.
Stephen Cotton wrote: “The relationship between the ITF and ICAO has a long history. Over the last five years, the ITF has been investing much bigger resources to ensure a strong presence at ICAO …
“Moreover, ITF affiliated aviation unions have undertaken the task to build an independent workers’ perspective on the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). … Therefore, we believe that there is a big scope to work in collaboration to maximise ICAO’s contribution to the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. Also, to further develop the human factor approach and its decisive role in ensuring a safer and more secure industry.”
According to the ICAO, Mr Sciacchitano has a 39-year career in aviation, with stints at the European Civil Aviation Conference and Italian aviation regulators.
The ICAO is the rule-making body for the global aviation industry and is based in Montréal, Canada, where the ITF recently opened a liaison office to promote its work at the organization.
