Air quality, low cost carriers and HIV/AIDS were among the pressing topics discussed by delegates at the ITF’s aviation section conference, which kicked off on 3 October in London.

A new 70-page resource pack for tackling the issue of HIV/AIDS in the industry was unveiled, following a 2010 ITF survey. It examines the extent of HIV/AIDS in the industry, provides a range of factsheets on a number of issues, including tackling discrimination and building workplace policies, and presents a number of case studies.

Concerns about the effects of contaminated air inside aircraft on safety-critical staff during flights and their long-term health were also discussed and dedicated ITF web pages, with advice, guidance and a film, highlighted. Representatives from the Universities of Swansea and Cardiff also gave a presentation on research into the impact of the low cost carrier model on workers. The results will be among the topics discussed with governments and employers during a global dialogue forum on civil aviation at the International Labour Organization in Geneva in February 2013.

ITF civil aviation secretary Gabriel Mocho said: “This conference was an important arena for frank discussion of some of the challenges civil aviation workers face and to look at how the ITF can support them. The HIV/AIDS pack, for example, is built on the premise that, as the disease does not respect geographical or industrial boundaries, unions must make connections with other industries and branches in the world of transport to tackle the issue.”

Delegates also signed a poster in support of 20 trade unionists sacked by DHL Turkey in what appears to be an anti-trade union move by the company. It will be sent to the picket lines and to DHL Turkey’s senior managers.

The HIV resource pack is available on request and to download from the publications page.
