Air France Union Says Airline Outlines 10% Job-Cut Plan (BusinessWeek.com)

Air France-KLM Group (AF), Europe’s largest carrier, plans to eliminate more than 5,000 jobs from its French workforce as it seeks a return to profitability.

The cuts, equivalent to 10 percent of posts at the Air France unit, will be achieved through voluntary departures and attrition, with the Paris-based company seeking to avoid firings, it said today in a statement.

TAM joins LAN and says it will leave the Star Alliance (Folha de Sâo Paulo)

TAM admitted yesterday it will no longer be part of the Star Alliance, an alliance of airlines of which it has been a member since May 2010.

According to Mauricio Amaro, Chairman of the Board of Latam, the holding company combining LAN and TAM that was officially established yesterday, in the coming months the group will decide whether TAM will join the LAN’s alliance, Oneworld, or “will be independent.”


Sir Stelios outlines Africa airline plans (Financial Times)

Africa is a step closer to getting a taste of Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou’s brand of low-cost flying, with the easyJet founder set to become a shareholder and board member of an African budget airline with a London listing.
FastJet, the company’s proposed name, is preparing to launch services in Ghana, possibly in three months’ time, using a business model devised by Sir Stelios’s easyGroup and aircraft decked in a familiar orange hue.
