Striking airport workers and fellow union supporters rallied at Toronto Pearson International Airport protesting Swissport’s treatment of its workers.

“What we have here is a battle of the one percenters against the working folk,” said Brian Lawrence, president of Teamsters Local 419 at the Sept. 3 protest. Hundreds of people marched from Terminal 3 to Terminal 1 at Pearson airport, causing severe traffic delays in the area.

The union represents some 700 Swissport employees, including baggage handlers, cabin cleaners and ground crew. Workers have been on strike since July 27 after 95 per cent voted against a new contract.

“It comes down to the fact that Swissport, this large international company, is claiming their bosses aren’t making enough money so they want to take it out of the pockets of working folks,” remarked Lawrence.
