The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) has expressed its solidarity with Argentinian pilots and their unions – the Argentinian Association of Airline Pilots (APLA) and Unión de Aviadores de Líneas Aérea (UALA) – opposing the decision of the National Civil Aviation Administration (ANAC) to allow foreign pilots to work at Argentine national airlines.

The 48-hour strike was planned to kick off at 6:00 am local time (09:00 GMT) on Thursday.

“At times of crisis the disputes that have taken place in Argentina have been tough, and by looking at the current situation I can safely say that they will continue to be tough. However, Argentinian aviation workers are also tough and good at defending their rights.

“And you are not alone in the fight.

“As you fight for jobs, as you fight for your right to strike and as you fight for justice, your sisters and brothers from around the world will be supporting you,” the ITF civil aviation section secretary Gabriel Mocho Rodriguez said.

At the time of writing, the Argentinian government made a U-turn and the ITF also congratulated its affiliates and emphasised the importance of starting a process of sincere dialogue and engagement by the ANAC with Argentinian unions representing pilots.
