Kenya aviation union wins settlement

November 18, 2011

"Go-slow" industrial action by aviation workers in Kenya came to an end recently after the workers reached a deal with their employer.

The workers represented by the ITF-affiliated Aviation and Allied Workers’ Union and employed by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), agreed on a “return to work” settlement on 4 November. The deal included increases in remuneration of between 100 and 300 per cent, with those on lower pay receiving higher pay and arrears backdated to 5 May 2011. The employer was also given a 10-day ultimatum to implement the deal. The revised collective bargaining agreement was set to be presented to the employer on 14 November.

The workers staged a protest at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport earlier this month over the KCAA’s failure to increase their pay.
